Cocktail recipe
Poet's Dream
A gin Martini drifting into honeyed herbs and quiet orange spice.

Ingredients
- 45 ml (1½ oz) London dry gin
- 30 ml (1 oz) dry vermouth
- 15 ml (½ oz) Bénédictine
- 2 dashes orange bitters
- Garnish: expressed lemon twist
Preparation
Stir gin and dry vermouth with Bénédictine until the herbal sweetness is cooled and stretched rather than dominant. Add orange bitters for lift, strain into a small cold glass and express a clean strip of lemon zest. Serve immediately, before the perfume fades.

History
Albert Stevens Crockett's *Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Days* (1931) printed the Poet's Dream as equal thirds dry gin, French vermouth and Bénédictine, finished with lemon peel. The equal-parts formula was repeated in later editions and the 1949 *Esquire* handbook. A drier 1937 *Café Royal Cocktail Book* variation reduced the herbal liqueur and introduced orange bitters. Our gin-forward specification belongs to that later stylistic lineage; the original 1931 recipe remains historically valid rather than an error to correct.
Mixology View
The original is lush; our version lets the gin breathe. A good historical note should preserve both expressions.
