Cocktail recipe
Painkiller
A sun-soaked rum and coconut drink with pineapple brightness and a fragrant crown of nutmeg.

Ingredients
- 60 ml (2 oz) dark rum
- 120 ml (4 oz) pineapple juice
- 30 ml (1 oz) orange juice
- 30 ml (1 oz) cream of coconut
- Garnish: freshly grated nutmeg (about 0.2 g)
Preparation
Shake the rum, pineapple, orange and coconut vigorously enough to turn the mixture creamy and aerated. Pour over a full glass of cold ice and grate whole nutmeg generously across the top; its aroma is part of the drink, not decoration.
Glassware
Tall highball or hurricane glass, crushed ice
History
The Painkiller emerged at the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands. Authorship and dating are contested: Pusser’s Rum credits Daphne Henderson in the early 1970s in one company account, while *The Oxford Companion to Spirits & Cocktails* describes the company’s early-1980s account and Charles Tobias’s subsequent adaptation; other local accounts credit earlier Soggy Dollar proprietors. The location is more secure than the individual creator or year. Pusser’s later registered the Painkiller cocktail name as a trademark in the United States, and promotes a rum-specific version. This brand-neutral Mixology recipe is not presented as the authorized Pusser’s specification; commercial naming and trademark usage require legal review.
Mixology View
We celebrate the original island drink without erasing its contested authorship or the later trademark. Nutmeg is an essential aroma, not an afterthought.
