Cocktail recipe

M & M

Smoky mezcal meets orange-herbal amaro in a deceptively simple duet.

M & M cocktail

Ingredients

  • 30 ml (1 oz) mezcal joven
  • 30 ml (1 oz) Amaro Montenegro
  • Garnish: expressed orange twist

Preparation

Measure equal parts mezcal and Montenegro into a mixing glass. Stir over cold, dense ice until the smoke softens into the amaro’s orange-herbal sweetness. Strain over one large cube and express an orange peel over the surface.

History

The M & M is a modern two-ingredient pairing of mezcal and Amaro Montenegro. The initials refer to the two ingredients, not a documented bar, inventor or date. The drink circulates in contemporary cocktail writing, but attribution is inconsistent; without a dated creator interview or an early printed menu we cannot responsibly award exclusive invention. Our equal-parts, stirred house service is a practical modern specification. Montenegro is important to the recognizable flavour profile; substituting a different amaro should be identified as a variation.

Mixology View

Two ingredients are enough when neither fights for the spotlight. This is a great drink to be precise about and modest about historically.
