Cocktail recipe

French Connection

Cognac's orchard-fruit depth meets the almond warmth of amaretto in a slow, luxurious sip.

French Connection cocktail

Ingredients

  • 40 ml (1⅓ oz) cognac
  • 20 ml (⅔ oz) amaretto liqueur
  • one large ice cube.
  • Garnish: Optional expressed orange peel.

Preparation

Chill a rocks glass and settle in a single large cube. Pour cognac first, then amaretto; stir deliberately for 10–15 seconds until the two become seamless. If using orange peel, express it lightly rather than leaving an overpowering garnish. Sip slowly as the drink opens over ice.

History

The cocktail's name is commonly associated with the 1971 film *The French Connection*, but the precise naming date, first bartender and original ratio are not firmly documented. The International Bartenders Association has historically presented an equal-parts cognac-and-amaretto formula; this Mixology house version deliberately uses more cognac for a drier, more spirit-led result. Neither the movie association nor the popular recipe proves a specific invention story.

Mixology View

Equal parts can become cloying with a sweet amaretto. Our 2:1 ratio lets cognac lead while almond supplies the velvet finish; show the equal-parts benchmark as a variation.
