Final Ward
Rye, lemon and green herbs turn the Last Word into a sharp, elegant encore.

- 22.5 ml (¾ oz) green Chartreuse
- 22.5 ml (¾ oz) maraschino liqueur
- 22.5 ml (¾ oz) fresh lemon juice

History
Phil Ward created the Final Ward at Death & Co in New York in 2007. It is an explicit riff on the equal-parts Last Word: rye replaces gin and lemon replaces lime, while green Chartreuse and maraschino remain. Its name plays on Ward's surname and the idea of a final word. The recipe circulated in cocktail writing by December 2007, when a contemporary blog documented the formula and a commenter connected it to Ward at Death & Co. This unusually close-in-time evidence supports the attribution more strongly than a later legend alone.
Mixology View
The rye and lemon swap is deceptively small but changes everything: pepper and grain replace juniper, and the citrus edge is cleaner. Equal parts remain non-negotiable.
